ABORIGINAL STORYTELLER AT THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

On Thursday, we got to go on a field trip to the Public Library to listen to an Aboriginal storyteller. He used the buffalo drum and other instruments to tell his stories. He also had us dance with him as he told one of his stories. His traditional Aboriginal stories were enjoyed by all!

SHELWIN HOUSE PRESENTATIONS

Mrs. Davis from Shelwin House has come to talk to us this week about; teasing people, picking on people, and 10 things to do instead of hitting. She will come three more times in the next month to talk to us about; what to do when you get angry, how to use your words, and getting along with everyone. These presentations, which are a part of our character education classes, are very helpful because they teach us how to treat others respectfully and how to deal with conflict properly. Thanks Mrs. Davis for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

96TH DAY OF SCHOOL

Today we celebrated the 96th day of school by finding out how many dozens there are in 96. We filled egg cartons with 96 counters until we had each counter in one section of an egg carton. We found out that it took 8 egg cartons to hold 96 counters. Therefore, 8 dozen is equal to 96!

WORKING WITH MRS. MICHALISHEN

Mrs. Michalishen came to our classroom today to work with us. She read us the Eric Carle story The Very Lonely Firefly and asked us to listen for the sound of /l/. We then played a sorting game with pictures of things that had the sound of /l/. Finally, we got to meet her crazy cat who loves to eat things that have the sound of /l/ such as lemon yellow paint, lettuce, and many other weird things that cats don't usually eat. We all agreed that we would like her cat to come back for another visit!

BOOK FAIR

Our school is having a book fair this week from Tuesday, Jan. 31 to Friday, Feb. 3. Everyone is welcome to come look at the books and shop from 8:30a.m. until 4:00p.m. each and every day. The books are awesome and it is lots of fun looking at all of them!

ROCKS AND RINGS

We had an exciting experience today! A visitor came to our school to teach us about curling. Each class took a turn going to the gym to work with our visitor. He explained a bit about how to play the game and then had us play some very fun curling games.

FILL THE GRID

We learned a new math game in class today. It is called FILL THE GRID. It is a two player game and you are racing to see who can fill their grid the fastest by answering addition questions.

SHAKE AND SPILL

We learned a new game today called SHAKE AND SPILL. To play the game, you will need a cup and some two-sided counters, as well as a pencil and paper. First, you put the two-sided counters (we used 5)into the cup. Next, you hold the cup in one hand and put the other hand over the top of the cup. Then, you carefully shake the cup and spill the counters out onto the table. You then sort the counters out into red on one side and white onto the other side to determine what the number combination is that you have spilled out on the table. Finally, you record the number combination onto your paper. You continue to shake and spill until you have discovered all of the ways to make that number.

LEARNING ABOUT ADDITION

We have been very busy learning about addition in math this month! We have been using internet games like "Banana Picking", two-sided math mats, interlocking blocks, dice inside dice and two-sided counters to help us discover the combinations for different numbers.

MATH PODS

We had math pods today and we were working on numbers 1 to 12. At the SMARTboard pod we solved a problem called "The Carrot Patch"; at the the Computers pod we worked on various websites practising counting to 12; at the Manipulatives pod we used pattern blocks to make designs with a number of blocks that were more than or less than a given number; and at the Paper and Pencil pod we wrote about the times we use numbers and what we have learned about numbers thus far.

73 DAYS OF SCHOOL

It is hard to believe but we have had 73 days of school as of today. We made a giant 73 with our bodies to celebrate. Can you see it?

FINDING WAYS TO MAKE 12

In math today, we did a problem with 12 fish and 2 fish bowls. We had to discover 4 different ways for the 12 fish to share the 2 fish bowls. Everyone worked real hard finding different ways.

GETTING INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

There is nothing like watching a school Christmas concert to get one into the Christmas spirit! We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to go and watch Miller School's Christmas Play dress rehearsal this morning. It was fabulous and we all enjoyed it very much!

AMAZING ANIMALS

We are learning about animals in science. We are starting our study, by classifying animals of different sorts in different ways such as number of legs, body coverings, habitats, etc.

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW CONFERENCES

On the evenings of Nov. 23rd and Nov. 24th, we had our "Show What You Know" conferences with our parents. We all brought our parents to school to show them what we have been doing in grade one. We read a morning message on the SMARTboard, played Face Off with power of ten cards, made a blog post on our blog, and read a story with comprehension questions. We then discussed our "Wows and Nows" with Mrs. Koval to set goals for our learning in Term Two.

P.J. AND CRAZY HAIR DAY

We had the P.J. and Crazy Hair Day on Friday, November 18th. Everyone who participated in this spirit day had great fun coming to school in their pjs and doing their hair as crazy as possible. We also enjoyed a delicious taco lunch prepared by our SCC. Yum! Yum!

P.L.A.C.E.

We have been very busy with P.L.A.C.E. these last few days. Things started with the Hoop Dance performance on Wednesday morning and then we got into our cross-graded groups with Davison and Miller School students. In the afternoon, we met with our artist to learn about our art form (dance, quilting, martial arts, tourism, etc.) We will continue to work in our groups until Friday afternoon, when we will share with everyone what we have learned about our art form. It will be a spectacular afternoon of performances and displays.

Our 601 buddies are helping us to learn how to work on the computers. We have learned how to read a story on Raz-Kids and post something on our personal blogs. Half of us work on the computers while the other half of the class do Reading Buddies and then we switch.

We celebrated Education Week at our school the week of October 17-21. We started the week with muffins and juice in the gym and an awards celebration. We ended the week with an afternoon of fun activities with our 601 buddies.

We started guided reading in our classroom this week. We are split up into 4 groups and our groups take turns doing Guided Reading with the teacher, Read To Someone with a friend, Read To Self or Listen To Reading on the computer, and Word Work with the teacher.

MATH PODS

We tried math pods for the first time today and we had a great time. We made dot patterns, used bingo dabbers to make a pattern strip, listened to the story "Ten Black Dots" and made our own dot pictures, and then sorted buttons using different sorting rules.

During the week of October 17th to 21st, we had Miss Dales and Miss Folnovic teaching us. They are both Arts Ed. pre-interns from the University of Regina doing their pre-internship in our classroom. We did many fun, interesting things with them and learned a lot about art, drama and music.

THANKSGIVING

To celebrate Thanksgiving, we talked about all of the different things we are thankful for. We then made turkeys by tracing our foot for the body and our hands for the feathers. We then added a beak, a wattle, feet and googly eyes. What awesome turkeys they are!

READ TO SELF

We have learned about the 3 ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story. Now we are learning about how to do "Read To Self" to practice reading by ourselves in order to become better readers. We are working on building our STAMINA!

Our Star Student brought her dog to school for Show-and-Tell today. His name is Buddy and he was very well behaved. He let everyone pet him and he was soooo cute!

TERRY FOX WALK

We helped raise money for cancer research by participating in the Terry Fox Walk this week. After the walk, we got to watch Mrs. Gavel get made into a sundae. What a mess! It sure was funny to watch though.

MYSTERY NAME

Each day we have a Mystery Person which we must guess as the letters of the name are revealed. We then sing the Vowel Song to determine the consonants and vowels in that person's name and then we write a poster about what that person likes and can do. What fun!
